I just use a general savings fund and try to throw a lot into that

Seek advice from real professionals before making any financial or other life-changing decisions. Occasionally I will use my emergency fund to get checking/savings account sign up bonuses. We also started a brokerage fund, so now I throw anything saved above the monthly minimum into the brokerage fund.
